Ursuline School New Rochelle: E-News

The Ursuline School

    October 21, 2014

Principal's Message

There was a meeting at the Province Center last Saturday on the topic of Governance in Ursuline Schools.  Administrators and Trustees from our school, as well as Mount St. Ursula and Ursuline Academy (DE), were in attendance.  We discussed the structures in place to make certain we are not only in line with the Ursuline tradition but that we are also providing a strong educational experience to our girls.

It is no secret that Catholic schools face challenges in times of economic difficulty. It is reassuring to know that the Catholic identity of The Ursuline School remains at the forefront along with the dedication to providing girls with the tools to be strong, resourceful, independent and successful in the future.  Since 1897, TUS has molded the leaders of today and tomorrow.

You can do your part in guaranteeing our continued success by promoting our Open House.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to attend on Sat, Nov 1st, 12:30 – 3:30pm. Look at and listen to your daughter, and you will have all of the validations you need to convince parents of girls that an Ursuline education is priceless.

Always Ursuline, Always Forward
Ms. Carol Killebrew, Principal

Learning about World Hunger

World Food Day is a day of action against hunger. On Oct 17th, the 8th grade gathered together for a Hunger Banquet to have an experience of what it means not to have equal access to food. When the students arrived, they drew tickets at random that assigned each to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier—based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Each income level received a corresponding meal.

The 20 percent in the high-income tier were served a sumptuous meal; the 30 percent in the middle-income section ate a simple meal of rice and beans; and the 50 percent in the low-income tier helped themselves to small portions of rice and water.

Interviews in Italian

Opportunities to speak in a foreign language are important in becoming proficient.  Ms. Saraceni’s Italian 2 Honors class recently practiced their knowledge of Italian verbs and tenses by interviewing each other.  Some students retained their student identities.  Others took on the roles of talk show hosts and celebrities. Several students made videos at home while others presented their interviews in class.

Advancement

Educate. Inspire. Empower . . . each of them

Last Fri evening, Oct 17th, we were very pleased to host our first President’s Reception at Wykagyl Country Club.  This was an important occasion as we thanked our major donors for their generous support of our school.  Trustees, alumnae, current families and Ursuline Sisters mingled as the Honors Choir sang a selection of pieces during the cocktail hour.  Mrs. Davidson expressed thanks on behalf of students, faculty and staff, and she shared recent school news.  The photo slideshow brought to life the impact of Annual Fund donations.

Fall Sports Award Dinner

Wed, Nov 5th, 6:30pm at Wykagyl Country Club for all fall sports teams except swimming.  Due to a conflict with sectional championships for swimming, the sports award dinner for swimmers will be another date.  Details will be posted shortly. Families of fall athletes, except swimming, are invited to register here.

Cross Country:  13 members of the team traveled to Orlando over Columbus Day weekend to compete in the Disney XC Classic where they had fantastic results.  Anna Flynn took 1st place in the Varsity 2A race for the 3rd consecutive year, leading the team to a 2nd place finish in the 23 team field.  Caroline LaGumina placed 2nd in the JV race, leading her team to a 1st place finish.

At the League 2B Championships, Ursuline dominated the field, winning league titles in the Varsity, JV and Freshman races.  Ursuline also had the League Champion in each race as Anna Flynn won the Varsity Race, Stephanie Athanasatos won the JV Race and Devin Donahue won the Freshman Race.  At Saturday's Freshman Relays, the relay teams took 2nd and 4th place. The team now is working hard, training for this Saturday's Westchester County Championships.

Field Hockey:  Varsity has improved to 6-7-2 on the season.  The highlight of the past 2 weeks was the team’s 6-3 win over Valhalla where Lindsey Andreana scored 4 goals and Katie Leonard had a goal and 3 assists.  The team looks forward to the upcoming post season.  JV is now 5-3-4 including a 1-0 win over Horace Greeley.  Both teams conclude their regular season today as they travel to Suffern.

Soccer:  Varsity is now 9-7 on the season.  They celebrated Senior Day yesterday when they hosted Scarsdale, as pictured below.  Congratulations to seniors Alaina DiDonato, Abby Dolgos, Kaileigh Phelan, and Sarah Williams.

Soccer seniors

The team has played some very close games lately and looks to a good post season run.  JV has lost only 2 games all season and has been playing great soccer lately. They finish their season today as they travel to Yorktown.  Modified has been continually improving this season as the team has many veteran players plus some new players. A highlight was a 0-0 tie against a tough White Plains team.

Swimming:  Swimming won another league title and improved to 101-0 with a victory over Tappan Zee on Senior Day.  The 500 Free saw Kerry Sherridan and Katharine Mannix turn in strong swims while Kate Amar, Kelly Amar and Josie Panitz had great meets for the Koalas. The team comes up on the strongest competition of the season Tuesday as they travel to face Clarkstown.  On Saturday the team will look to defend its conference title.

Swim seniors

Congratulations to seniors Rosemary Betzig, Niamh Butler, Jessica Catarinacchio, Claire Dillon, Kitty Elwyn, Kyra McNamee, Raine O’Sullivan, Jessica Rice and Caroline Squillante.

Tennis: Varsity participated in the Conference III championships last week where senior Sophia Moeller won in a tough three sets 6-3, 3-6, 15-13.  She earned the Conference Singles Championships title and the right to participate in the upcoming Section 1 Individual Championships.  Good Luck Sophia!!!!  JV has completed their successful season with only 2 losses on the season.  The team was dominant in most matches and looks forward to continued success next season.

Volleyball:  Varsity clinched the co-league title this past week with a victory over White Plains and ends their regular season with a 12-4 record.  They hosted Ardsley last Thurs when they honored their 7 seniors as well as celebrated their Pink Game (read more below).  Congratulations to seniors Bridget Carsky, Delia Conlon, Lauren Gaudiano, Yelena Kunst, Ashley Mintz, Hannah McCarthy, and Shannon McKeon.

Swim seniors

JV capped off a perfect season and a 31 game winning streak spanning 2 seasons on Monday in Clarkstown.  The team dominated their opponents, even defeating previously unbeaten Ardsley last week.  Modified remains a perfect 7-0 on the season as they continue to play fantastic volleyball.

The Arts

Further to the report above, the Honors Choir performed beautifully last Friday evening at our President’s Reception.  Under the direction of Dr. Jean Boehler, they sang "Jubilate Deo" in Latin, "Child of Peace" in English and "Al Shlosha D'Varim" in Hebrew.  The Honors Choir was accompanied by Dr. Laurie Adamo Ricigliano who is also the Ursuline golf coach.  The Choir is preparing to travel to Rome in January to sing for Pope Francis.

Serviam in Action

Seniors Make A Difference

On Wed, Oct 15th, the entire senior class participated in the annual Make-a-Difference Day. Students visited sites all over Westchester County to carry out the Serviam mission. Locations included: United Hebrew Geriatric Center, The Children's Center for Early Learning, The Wartburg, United Cerebral Palsy, and the John Coleman School where Ursuline alumna MaryLou Pagano, a member of that Advancement Team, welcomed them.

Make a Difference Day

Following the morning at their various sites, students returned to have a luncheon and share their reflections on the morning. A common theme this year was that many of the seniors felt extremely grateful for how blessed they had been in their own lives. As the seniors prepare to celebrate Ring Day, this day of service was the opportunity for them to live out the mission of the school together as the class of 2015. Please click HERE for the Photo Gallery.

Think Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  We commend our cheerleaders, volleyball team and Breast Cancer Club who focused their efforts on this cause.

Last Sun, Oct 19th, the Varsity Cheerleaders opened up the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Manhattanville College with a BEAT CANCER cheer. Then TEAM URSULINE, which included members of the Breast Cancer Club, completed the 5 mile walk for the American Cancer Society. A great time was had by all as they raised funds for such an important cause.

Cheerleaders Beat Cancer Walk

The volleyball squad’s last home game of the season was also their Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Thanks to the combined efforts of the girls and volleyball parents, and through the sale of raffle tickets for 2 pairs of RayBan Sunglasses, Dig Pink bracelets, TUS VB ‘Sweat’ towels, a 50/50 raffle, a concession stand/bake sale, and a very generous corporate gift, the teams raised a total of $1,775 for Relay for Life (American Cancer Society).  Well done!
