Ursuline School New Rochelle: E-News

The Ursuline School

    October 20, 2015

Principal's Message

If there's something strange in your neighborhood/ Who you gonna call?

I remember trying to explain Ring Day to friends back home, starting with the decorated school and the class songs to the phrase “Being Ringed,” and as you can guess, words cannot describe the energy, excitement, and nostalgia for this one hour event.

Then I told them about the Father-Daughter Dance, where every single girl is a princess for an evening. And while it is an event for every Ursuline student, it is another chance to showcase our Seniors as they alone have the honor of wearing long dresses and are the stars of the night as they and their fathers are introduced to all in attendance.

Finally, nobody could imagine trying to add one more item to a busy weekend, but that is not the TUS way! The Mother-Daughter Communion Luncheon is the perfect way to end a celebratory string of events, for here we have the chance to become grounded and mindful.

So while this whirlwind may seem strange to those unfamiliar with our history, it is what allows us to stand out from other schools. These next four days are when we have the opportunity to do what we do best: We get to be Ursuline.

Always Ursuline, Always Forward
Ms. Carol Killebrew, Principal

Financial Aid Dates

TUS Grants and Work Study Grants are need-based financial awards for qualified high school students only, as demonstrated through the evaluation of a financial aid application package by The Ursuline School Financial Aid Committee. All applications are processed by School & Student Services for Financial Aid at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey.

Beginning November 2nd, you can complete an on-line application at www.sssbynais.org/parents. Our school code is 7878.  The deadline for applications and supporting documentation for incoming 9th graders, renewal applicants and all current Ursuline high school students seeking aid for the first time is December 31, 2015.

Mind, Body and Soul

On October 14 our 6th, 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a special day dedicated to Mind, Body and Soul.  The girls rotated through three stations - coding, yoga, and a yarn craft. First they learned simple computer coding, using a program offered by Code.org and supervised by seniors in our computer science class. During a 45 minute session, our middle school generated 12,701 lines of code.  Then the students created a yarn craft titled "God's Eye" which we hung along the breezway outside the cafeteria. Many seniors helped as part of their Make a Difference Day.

The girls were taught yoga movements by certified yoga teacher Mrs. Florence Mitchell from Himalayan Institute in PA. Mrs. Mitchell is the grandmother of a current student.  She was assisted by her daughter, yoga teacher and current parent Kourtney Ketterhagen P '22. The many benefits of yoga include increased balance, posture and coordination.

The day ended with all the girls doing "The Wagon Wheel Relay" on Kelly Mac Field. The 9 team relay was an organized chaos with balloons, ping pong balls, hula hoops, elephant walks and a great display of teamwork!!

Lunch

If your daughter regularly brings her lunch to school but forgets it, she may purchase lunch in the cafeteria, even if she is not on Meal Pay: Simply have your daughter go to Mrs. Lynch for a lunch permit, and remind her to bring in the money the next day. As noted on page 11 of the Student Handbook: Students are not to have food delivered to the school. Thank you.

Ring Day means Winter Uniform

Our very special tradition of Ring Day is Thursday, October 22.  This day calls for each student to wear Winter Dress Uniform - kilt and a collared shirt worn with the grade level sweater, tights (seniors only in white tights for Ring Day) and shoes.

This day also signals the change to winter uniform on a daily basis.  Please check the Uniform Guidelines tab on the Parent Portal or pages 12-13 of the handbook for details. Also, please note that on Ring Day school dismissal is 12 noon for all students.

Field Day

The tradition of Field Day, which started in 1997, was alive again on October 9 on the Ursuline campus! Students and adults joined together for the Battle of the Blue and Gold on Field Day 2015. Blue and Gold battled it out in a variety of activities, filled with lots of music, cheering and celebrating and even a little rain. In the end, the spirit of the Gold team prevailed and they came out victorious on Field Day 2015.

Grandparent, Special Guest Day

Next Wednesday October 28 is the day that Grandparents or Special Guests of our 6th graders visit school.  The event starts at 8 a.m. and ends at approximately 9 a.m. in the cafeteria.  We invite grandparents and special guests to park in the Senior Parking Lot.  On that day, seniors will report to school after the Long Homeroom and be here on time for first period at 9 a.m. We are hoping to have more than enough spaces here at TUS for our Grandparents/Special Guest to park because we are asking the seniors to please park on North Ave and we have permission from Beth El Synagogue to park in back of the temple.

Yearbooks

The 2016 Yearbook is now available for pre-order.  Books purchased before November 30 are available at the discounted rate of $85. Consider purchasing your yearbook now to take advantage of this rate. Seniors do not need to purchase a yearbook. Please click here to purchase the yearbook online.

Recognizing our CS Seniors

Yesterday, the seniors taking the Computer Science 2 class were honored by each receiving a special tee-shirt.  On the front is the student’s name and on the back is the ASCII conversion of the letters TUS as well as #womenoftech. Our 12th grade Ursuline computer scientists take the lead in organizing our annual celebration of Computer Science Education Week which this year will be December 7 – 13, 2015.

The Green Challenge

Did you know that cotton, one of the fashion industry’s top revenue sources, is among the most pesticide-intensive crops on the planet? Or, on the other hand, that some top designers prioritize ethical business practices and are proving that they can make stylish clothing from sustainable materials, using less water and pesticides and contributing to a healthier planet? This is just one example of the daily facts offered this month by Project Green Challenge.

Our environmental club students and AP Environmental class members are participating in the "Teens Turning Green Challenge." Anyone can sign up! Receive daily information and challenges by email each morning. Then either complete actions and upload deliverables to gather points for prizes or simply increase your knowledge of environmental issues. Details at http://www.projectgreenchallenge.com/

Sophomores and the Boomerang Project

On October 16 our Sophomore Class spent a great Personal Development day with Stu Cabe of the Boomerang Project. The girls were encouraged to go out of their comfort zone and reminded "you get back what you give". The girls bonded with their classmates while learning about themselves in a unique manner. Thank you to Stu for sharing his message with the girls.

Fathers' Club

We look forward to seeing many of you at the Father-Daughter Dance this Friday!  Here's what else is coming up.

Basketball Tournament

The annual CYO basketball tournament that we organize is always a wonderful event and one important way that prospective families get introduced to Ursuline. If you would like to be a part of this, we need volunteers for both Saturday and Sunday October 24 and 25 to help work at the tournament.  We need help setting up, serving food and cleaning up. This is an excellent Ursuline showcase event as it draws players from all over the county.  If you can work on either day please contact us at fathersclub2013@aol.com and let us know which dates and times work best for you.

Open House

The annual Ursuline Open House for prospective new students and their families is Saturday October 31.  The Fathers' Club plays a critical role in welcoming families by expertly directing traffic on this extremely busy day as well as speaking with prospective families about how dads get involved at Ursuline. We need a handful of fathers to help direct traffic and a few brave ones to staff a table inside and answer questions from these guests.  If you can help us, please let us know at fathersclub2013@aol.com

Serviam in Action

Make A Difference Day

On October 14 the Class of 2016 continued the Senior Class tradition of Make A Difference Day. They were inspired by Liz McEntee DeCecco '98 who shared her incredible story of living the Ursuline motto of "Serviam" over the years and how she has shared her talents with so many people worldwide. She encouraged the Class of '16 to go out of their comfort zone and share their passion for life with others.

 Liz McEntee with students

Then the girls went out into the community to share their gifts and, most importantly, their time, in the community. They visited The Wartburg, Meals on Wheels, AFYA, United Hebrew Geriatric Center, Blythdale Early Childhood Center, United Cerebral Palsy, The Children's Center for Early Learning, PS 23 in Yonkers, The John Coleman Center and helped Ursuline middle school students with a craft project.

Helping on Make A Difference Day

After their morning service, seniors gathered to share their experiences and reflect on the day. The Class of 2016 will add these hours of service toward the 50,000 hours that The Ursuline School community has pledged to Pope Francis as part of our Spiritual Bouquet.

 Sharing after the service visits

Making Strides

Team Ursuline again joined hundreds of walkers in the October 18 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Manhattanville College  Our team raised $1,475 for breast cancer research as well as providing free information and services for those diagnosed with the disease. We have been participating in this event for at least 15 years. Once again our cheerleaders performed the Beat Cancer cheers.

More Rebuilding after Sandy

Ursuline students and faculty have been volunteering with the St Bernard Project for several years to help the people of Rockaway recover from Superstorm Sandy which brought devastation 3 years ago. On October 17 another group of our students and faculty moderators Ms. McDermott and Mrs. LaGumina again contributed their time, energy and skill with tools to help residents rebuild.

Results

Best of luck to all of our Varsity teams who are about to enter the post season portion of their season. GO KOALAS!

Cross Country:  18 girls travelled to the 20th Annual Disney Cross Country Classic held ESPN Wild World Of Sports in Orlando, FL.  Senior Anna Flynn won the Varsity race for a record, 4th consecutive time leading the team to a 2nd place finish despite oppressive conditions.  She edged out her sister, Sarah, who took 2nd. Read about it here in an article that Disney posted.

The JV team took 2nd place out of 16 schools, with Sydney Orr, Annina Bulfamante & Hadley Nyre coming in with top 10 finishes.  With both teams placing 2nd, each girl came home with a silver medal and the teams won the treasured Mickey trophies.

This past weekend, Sarah Flynn, Lily Sheehan, Caitlin Conly, Hadley Nyre & Claire Wilson ran off to a victory at the 60th NYC 8000m CC Relay shattering the old course record and defeating the competition by over 5 and a half minutes.  Freshman Sarah Flynn was selected as the USATF New York High School Athlete of the Month for September 2015 based on her outstanding performances last month.  The entire team now enters the championship portion of their season beginning with today's League Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.

Field Hockey:  Varsity finished its regular season 4-6-1.  The past 2 weeks featured back to back wins over White Plains & Harrison as Lindsey Andreana & Katie Gies continue to lead the offensive attack for the Koalas while goalie Danielle Fucci anchors the defense.  JV finished their season 1-5-2 and improved with each game they played.

Soccer: Varsity is 8-4-2 on the season.  They played tough league competition over the past 2 weeks, with a tough loss to Mamaroneck, and an overtime tie to North Ave rival New Rochelle, coming back from 2 goals down, and scoring twice in the final 8 minutes to send it to OT.  They battled back and forth for 2 over time periods with goalie Jena Pelinkovic coming up with 3 amazing saves to protect the tie.  The game was then called due to darkness.  JV finshed their fantastic season 11-0-1, with the lone tie of the season coming in a 2-2 game against Mamaroneck.  The team outscored their opponents 35-4 this season.  Modified has been playing well against some tough opponents so far, highlighted by a 5-0 win over Isaac Young.

Swimming:  The team finished their regular season undefeated with many fantastic swims.  Josie Panitz has already qualified for the NYS Championships in both the 100 breaststroke & the 200 IM while the 200 Free relay team of Josie Panitz, MaryKate Melnyk, Kelly Amar & Kate Amar have qualified as well.

Tennis:  Varsity won a league championship with big wins over Scarsdale & Mamaroneck to complete their regular season.  At the Conference Championships, Laina Campos and Vanessa Ciano advanced to the Conference doubles finals, losing a tough match in the 3rd set tie breaker 10-6, taking 2nd place and a spot in today's Sectional Tournament.  Keira Tobia advanced to the Sectional Singles tournament by winning in the 5-6 match at the conference meet.  JV finished up their season with a great 7-0 win over New Rochelle to complete their season at 4-4.

Volleyball:  Varsity is 14-2 and 9-0 and already won at least a share of the league title going in to today's match with Scarsdale.  The past 2 weeks saw the team come up with big wins over powerful Scarsdale, Mahopac & Ardsley, coming from behind on the road down 2-0 to come back to win.  JV team carries a 50 game win streak into tonight's match. Modified has been playing fantastic volleyball and is 4-1 on the season and will look to continue their fantastic play today against Mamaroneck.
